Just Like Paradise

about

This song came out the third-to-last year that I went to sleep-away summer camp, and the last year that I went to the only summer camp that I went to three consecutive summers in a row. All I remembered about it was that there was one camp counselor in my bunk who had this cassette and I remember the color scheme from the cover art.

The way that red contrasted with the background felt so modern. The angle of the rocks made the image look so busy. The album cover in it's miniature form made more of an impact on me than most of the music.

This one song was the big single which I'm sure I must have made a copy of onto a mixtape but I have no other memory of the song. If you search YouTube there's a really good promo video for it shot in what appears to be an airplane hanger in Japan as a tour rehearsal. I love the look of that video as well.

You don't really think of David Lee Roth or Van Halen as having much to do with design but they've hired some good people along the way. I love the pre-chorus of this song. I write a lot of D-A-G songs and the way the pre-chorus with the G-E lifts you up and gets you ready to sing your head off is just so magical and simple.

After I began working on this a friend of mine told me that the song appears in "Rock of Ages" which I've never seen. I've played it at open mic a few times and people love it, I ask if they've heard it before and very few have.

It has almost nothing to do with any of the other music that I remember from 1988 and I don't know why that is. Sometimes I wonder if the cover is a reference to Sammy Hagar's "VOA". Every time I listen to an interview with "Diamond Dave" I learn something new.
